With the extreme cold temperatures lately here in Northwest Arkansas, we could all use a little help staying warm. These 5 tips will tell you how to get the most from your heating system, and beat the cold winter weather.
1. Replace Your Heater’s Air Filter
A dirty air filter restricts airflow, which makes your heater not work as well (and costs you more to operate!) Replace your air filter as recommended by your heater’s manufacturer.
2. Open All Vents and Make Sure They aren’t Blocked
Contrary to what you might have been told you should not close any vents, even in rooms that you may not use. Having your vents opened, and making sure they aren’t blocked or obstructed by anything will help to evenly distribute heat throughout your house.
3. Use a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat lets you automatically turn down your heat when you’re away from home, and then turn it back up to bring the house back to a comfortable temperature when you need it. It takes less energy to warm a cool room than it does trying to maintain a warm temperature all day.
4. Reverse The Switch on Your Ceiling Fans
During the months that you operate your heating system it’s a good idea to reverse the direction that your ceiling fans rotate. Reversing a fan’s direction helps to move the heated air upwards and distribute it throughout a room. This is especially helpful in rooms with high ceilings.
5. Get an Inspection of Your Heating System
You should have your heater inspected routinely by an HVAC company that you trust. A heater that doesn’t work properly will not only cost you more money to operate, it can cause deadly incidents like a house fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Bonus! Examine Your Ducts
Your ducts are what carry the heated air from your heater to the rooms of your house. Over time, ducts may develop small (or large!) gaps that let heat leak out and into your attic or under your house. Properly sealed ducts can save you as much as 10% on your heating bills!
